Basically, there are two types of video teleconferencing systems. They are dedicated systems and desktop systems. The difference between these two is in the components they are made up of. Generally, there are several components in this system. They are:
Video camera or web cam- required for getting visual inputs A computer monitor or television- required to get the television output. Audio aids. Lan or internet connection for data transfer. In dedicated systems, all these components are integrated in a single piece of equipment. It contains all the electrical interfaces, audio aids, and an image projector as well. There are many types of dedicated systems including large, small and individual VTUs.They are classified based on portability and cost.

The second type of VTU is called desktop VTU.By using desktop systems, video conferences can be carried out using dispersed personal computers. They are like add-ons to a personal computer.
